A small stick-beaten
frame drum from Brazil used in samba school
drumming (also spelled tambourim). There are
a few different techniques. One involves holding the
drum in the left hand while beating the skin with
a frayed stick, held in the right hand, that achieves
more of a flam-like sound. The left hand middle finger
also can dampen the skin. Another technique involves
the left hand turning the drum around the stick for
fast rhythms phrased with a particular Brazilian feel.
